Direct Investment and Supplier Tooling will support the production of the next generation Chevrolet Equinox at CAMI Assembly
Oshawa, ON (February 12, 2015) — Today, General Motors of Canada President, Steve Carlisle, announced that GM will invest an additional C$560 million to prepare GM’s CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario to be a manufacturing location of the next generation Chevrolet Equinox. Of the total investment, GM will invest $190 million directly at CAMI Assembly in manufacturing equipment and tools and $370 million in vendor tooling with suppliers in Canada.
“GM is making investments at the award-winning CAMI Assembly plant to enable it to manufacture the next generation Chevrolet Equinox,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director of General Motors of Canada. “These investments, which follow planning and study with our partners, are a further vote of confidence in our employees, our business and our future in Ontario and Canada.”
With today’s announcement, GM’s current investment program at the CAMI Assembly plant rises to more than $800 million. GM previously announced $250 million for a new body shop and flexible manufacturing equipment and tooling, converting the manufacturing facility to support future vehicle production. This conversion plan was first announced in March 2013 following GM’s detailed evaluation process.
“We are pleased to see General Motors securing its future in Southern Ontario. Our Government is committed to strengthening our manufacturing sector and creating jobs for Canadian families. This investment proves that our highly-skilled workforce, low taxes and open markets make Canada one of the best places in the world to build cars,” said The Honourable James Moore, Canada’s Industry Minister.
“I’m delighted that GM is making this significant investment at their high-quality Ingersoll manufacturing facility,” said The Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Employment, and Infrastructure. “This welcomed investment underscores GM’s confidence in Ontario as a global leader in automotive manufacturing, and a great destination for building the next generation Chevrolet Equinox.”
